Small fish. Big decisions.

Get more control of growth and welfare in the smolt tanks

OptoScale’s camera technology gives you real-time insight into the smolt’s growth, weight variation and health status – straight from the tank, without the need for manual sampling. The solution has been developed in close collaboration with those who work with smolts on a daily basis, and provides a precise and practical basis for decision-making in a hectic production environment.

It all started with a simple question from a customer:
“Does the bioscope you use in the sea also work on land?”

It was the start of several years of testing, adaptation and good discussions – and a solution that today mirrors everyday life in smolt production.

Following the development

With a tailor-made bioscope for smolts, you can follow the development in the tanks – without disturbing the fish. You get an overview of average weight, variation and growth, and a more secure basis for planning stocking. At the same time, you gain ongoing insight into fish welfare. The system is trained on smolts and automatically detects shortened gill lids, fin damage and other relevant deviations – with high precision and completely without manual handling.

Smolt OptoScale

Growth control before release

Real-time data on weight and variation gives you a solid basis for planning – and makes it easier to follow developments throughout the production process.

Manual sampling often provides a limited picture – and often comes too late. With OptoScale’s technology, you get continuous insight into growth and development, around the clock, without disturbing the fish.

The solution has been tested and validated for fish in the smolt stage, and provides high precision even in lower weight classes. You get an overview of the average, variation and development in real time – and control over both the smallest and largest fish in the group. When it’s time to stock, you’ll have up-to-date figures you can actually rely on.

Early insight into welfare gives you better smolts

Shortened gill lids and fin wear often occur before you see it with the naked eye. With OptoScale’s technology, these changes are detected automatically – in real time – right from the tub.

Smolts in tanks face different challenges than fish in the sea. That’s why we’ve developed our own models trained specifically on smolt – in close collaboration with fish health experts.

The system analyzes high-resolution images in real time and recognizes deviations with high accuracy. You receive ongoing welfare information directly into the web portal – ready for use in assessments and follow-up. You avoid handling and manual counting – and instead get a reliable basis for decision-making that makes it easier to monitor welfare in production.

“Our customers took us ashore – and together we developed a solution that reflects their everyday lives.”

Built for vessels. Scaled for the future.

Tailored for vessels and everyday life on land

This is not a scaled-down sea version. The smolt solution has been developed from the ground up – together with biologists and operators who know production from the inside. The goal has always been to create a tool that gives you value where it actually happens – at the tank.

More features on the way

Real-time data for growth and welfare is just the beginning. We’re continuously developing the portal and analysis tools to give you an even better overview, more relevant indicators and more visual insights. Everything is developed with one goal in mind: To give you faster, more precise and safer decisions.

Developed together with the industry

OptoScale develops technology where it happens. The entire solution is shaped through close dialog with those who actually use it – from the first test to the finished product. This results in better tools, higher precision and faster improvements. The needs of smolt production are constantly changing. So does our technology. And we’re only just getting started.
